BIOGRAPHY

Ma Ly (b. 1970) is a French self-taught professional painter residing in Fresno, California. In 2013 and 2016, the Fresno Arts Council honored him as Artist Of The Year at their Dining With The Artist and "Horizon Awards" events. In 2016, The Foundation @ FCOE honored him as Art Instructor Of The Year at their FCOE Honor Gala.

Born in Laos of Hmong descent, Ly relocated after the Vietnam war to France where he lived 32 years before settling in 2008 in Fresno to start his artistic career. Ly founded and managed his first art gallery, Colligo Studio, inside downtown Fresno Broadway Studios from 2010-2014. At the end of 2014, he moved to M Street Arts Complex to run his new studio, Ma Ly Atelier, where he teaches intensively art to children and adults. He also has been an art instructor at Fresno Adult School since 2011 and taught at Michaels in Clovis, California from 2011-2015.

The human element is at the core of Ly's work, through portraiture and narrative paintings, done in a realistic style. His recurrent theme is a realm of contrast, including youth and old, good and evil, war and peace, light and darkness, life and death, etc. His award-winning paintings have been displayed in several local art shows and venues including Fresno City Hall, the Fresno Water Tower, Chris Sorensen Studio, Clovis Veterans Memorial District, and the Big Fresno Fair.

In January 2011, he completed a life size posthumous portrait of General Vang Pao for his memorial service held at the Fresno Convention Center. In 2013, the Fresno County Office of Education commissioned him to paint the portraits of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. In 2015, he painted the posthumous portrait of Fresno activist Betty Rodriguez that is on permanently display at the Betty Rodriguez Regional Library. Also, he has illustrated the children’s book “Enchanted Necklace” by award-winning author Jewell Reinhart Coburn (co-author of Jouhana, Hmong Cinderella) and journalist Mai Kou Xiong.

Since 2013, Ly has been artistic director on The Art of Life® project that pairs cancer survivors and local artists to create a piece of art. The pieces have been subsequently displayed in different locations in Fresno.

In 2014, he and Jackie Cabraloff of M Street Arts Complex created the monthly event Second Saturday Downtown Fresno where different art venues are open in the daytime.
